Elkton Wedding
Elkton is a town in Cecil County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,893 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cecil CountyGR6.
Elkton was once known as the "Gretna Green of the East" because of its popularity as a place for eloping couples to marry until a state law was passed in 1938 requiring a 48-hour waiting period. Still, the town maintains several wedding chapels. Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller were married in the Main Street chapel. Elkton is located at 393636N, 754933W (39.610016, -75.825883)GR1.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 21.3 km (8.2 mi). 20.8 km (8.0 mi) of it is land and 0.5 km (0.2 mi) of it (2.19%) is water. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 11,893 people, 4,446 households, and 2,898 families residing in the town. The population density was 571.8/km (1,480.5/mi). There were 4,743 housing units at an average density of 228.1/km (590.4/mi). The racial makeup of the town was 85.85% White, 9.64% African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.78% from other races, and 2.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.97% of the population.
